Friends of the Mackinaw Area Library

Hello from the Director of the Mackinaw Area Library! The Mackinaw Area Public Library continues to work to engage the community and to provide a variety of services to its patrons. One way is working with the Friends of the Mackinaw Area Public Library to improve what we already have and bringing in new programs and services. The Friends group participated in 2015 programs like the Poem in Your Pocket Day and planning for the celebration of the Library’s first 100 years. The Friends group welcomes your participation.

Why a Friends Group?

The purpose of the Friends of Mackinaw Area Public Library group is to create and grow an organization of individuals whose interest in libraries is leveraged to promote and support fund raising and act as advocates for the Library within the community.

The Friends group will promote and focus public attention on the library that stimulates the use of the library's programs and services. The Friends group will receive and encourage gifts, memberships, endowment and bequests to the library and support the library in the achievement of library goals and objectives.

In 2015, the Mackinaw Area Public Library celebrated 100 years of access to lifelong learning in Mackinaw City. In 1912, six local women formed a club to study the works of William Shakespeare. Two years later, the club reorganized as the Mackinaw Woman's Club to 'create an organized center of action among women for incorporation in literacy, educational and philanthropic work', The Library was founded and later housed in the Clubhouse of the Mackinaw Woman's Club. One of the club's most notable projects was to collect the first set of books used to start the library.

The Friends of the Mackinaw Area Public Library group was formed for the purpose of carrying on the work developed initially by the  original members of the Mackinaw Woman's Club. The goal of this new organization will be to raise funds for projects, activities and acquisitions in excess of those provided within the knowledge and informed interest in the library's functions, resources, services and needs; and to encourage community participation in library activities. It was appropriate to lanch a support organization for one of our community's most valuable assets, the Mackinaw Area Public Library and its two branches in Pellston and Bliss. You can help by becoming a member of the Friends group and/or volunteering time. There is a link to the Membership Form on this page.

If you have fund raising ideas or would like to help with any of the Friends group projects, you can let us know at our email address FriendsoftheMackinawLibrary@gmail.com. You can also talk to any Library staff member. We welcome your input and participation. Thank you in advance for your support.

Here are basic rules and forms if you're interested in joining the friend's group.
