Hawks Over Mackinaw Program

Hawk Watch

The Mackinaw City area has long been recognized as a good place to view birds of prey circling overhead in the spring skies. An organized effort to tally this migration spectacle began in 2012 and has continued through this year. Steve Baker of the Mackinac Straits Raptor Watch will share many interesting facts about raptor migration with slides and handouts. Learn why the Straits are a migration bottleneck, what a kettle is, how to tell a Red-tailed Hawk from a Rough-legged Hawk, and how to follow the daily tallies online. Learn the best time to see Golden Eagles and how to tell a Golden from a Bald Eagle.
