The sages and initiates of the ancient world were always those who could 'read the stars'. Known to contemporary culture as astrologers, these sages understood the movements of the planets and the rising and setting of the fixed stars as letters and words with meaning, just as we today understand the vowels and consonants in our alphabet.  It took centuries of time for this star speaking to transition from an oral tradition to written words on a page that then wound up in books.

May is "Get Caught Reading Month," so we will turn our attention to the sky through books, and find our way along the same stairway to the stars that the ancients tread.

Our guest speaker is Mary Stewart Adams, Program Director for Emmet County's Headlands International Dark Sky Park. Using star maps and books from the library's collection, Mary will lead us on an engaging and interactive journey of learning how to know the sky, and why reading about the night can enrich our experience of actually seeing it.

Please RSVP and join us at the library at 528 W. Central Avenue in Mackinaw City for the 7 pm program on Tuesday, May 5.  For more details, contact the library at 231-436-5451, mackinaw1@gmail.com ;  You can also “Like” us on Facebook.
