The Mackinaw Area Public Library main branch in Mackinaw City is thrilled to welcome the Upper Peninsula Michigan Book Tour once again!  This year’s focus is on the great women authors in the state of Michigan.  They are celebrated in the recently published book “Here: Women Writing on Michigan's Upper Peninsula,” edited by Ronald Riekki.  This piece published by MSU Press, draws on the work of Upper Peninsula authors past and present to create a vibrant kaleidoscope of voices and experiences. Over thirty authors important to the region appear in this exceptional and diverse volume.  In poetry, short fiction and novel excerpts, the unique character of the U.P. materializes on the page. The book also shines a spotlight on powerful emerging voices.  The first of its kind, this is an anthology for all seasons, an homage to the rich literary heritage of the region.

Joining us for this event:

Sue Harrison is the author of six critically acclaimed and internationally bestselling novels. “Mother Earth Father Sky,” “My Sister the Moon” and “Brother Wind” make up The Ivory Carver Trilogy, an epic adventure set in prehistoric Alaska. “Song of the River,” “Cry of the Wind” and “Call Down the Stars” comprise The Storyteller Trilogy.  Sue’s young adult book, SISU, was released by Thunder Bay Press.  “Mother Earth Father Sky” is an international bestseller. The six Alaska books have been released as ebooks by Open Road Integrated Media. Harrison is currently writing a novel set in Neolithic Europe. The working title is BONE FIRE.

Julie Buckles is the author of "Paddling to Winter: A Couple's Wilderness Journey from Lake Superior to Northern Canada,” a memoir about her 1,700-mile canoe honeymoon to Wollaston Lake, Saskatchewan, where she spent a winter on an isolated island cabin. The book has been short listed for several awards including the Foreword Book of the Year in adventure, the Midwest Booksellers Choice Awards, and the Northeastern Minnesota Book Awards.  Julie lives one mile from Lake Superior, with her husband, two children and a recreational kennel of Siberian huskies. With twenty years of reporting experience, Buckles teaches journalism at Northland College in Ashland.

Julie Brooks Barbour is the author of “Small Chimes” and two chapbooks: “Earth Lust” and “Come to Me and Drink”. Her poems have appeared in Waccamaw, Four Way Review, diode, storySouth, PrimeNumber Magazine, burntdistrict, The Rumpus, Midwestern Gothic, Blue LyraReview, and VerseDaily. She is co-editor of the journal Border Crossing and an Associate Poetry Editor at ConnotationPress: An Online Artifact. She teaches composition and creative writing at Lake Superior State University.

On Friday, July 24th at 3 pm, each novelist and/or poet will share a reading from one or more of their books and will offer a brief Q&A session.  The book “Here: Women Writing on Michigan's Upper Peninsula,” will be available to buy at a discounted price, and the authors will have copies of their books for sale and signing.  Join us for the U.P. Michigan Author Book Tour at 528 W. Central Ave. in Mackinaw City!  For more details, contact the library at 231-436-5451, mackinaw1@gmail.com
